STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

The Civil Engineering program has chapters of honorific and professional societies operating in campus: American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Association of General Contractors (AGC), Puerto Rico Water & Environment Association RUM Chapter (PRW&EA RUM), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), College of Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico (IIC-CIAPR and IA-CIAPR), Society of Women Engineers (SWE),Honor Society of Tau Beta Pi, Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and Surveyors Institute of Puerto Rico. All these societies are well organized and properly recognized by the faculty and the university’s administration. Faculty advisors are assigned to each organization and support by the Department and the institution is also provided. Six of these organizations are coordinated by the Civil Engineering and Surveying Association (AICA), which is composed by the president of each organization.

Although faculty advisors for student chapters do not receive any formal credit, their job is recognized as necessary and meritorious whether working in committees or giving any other institutional service to the academic community. This is considered positive and a plus during faculty evaluations, promotions, and when funds are assigned for traveling and other benefits. Student associations and student chapters receive support and benefits through office space and equipment, secretarial services, and physical facilities for their activities. Occasional funding for traveling are also assigned for one or two delegates to attend events.  Massive transportation is awarded by request and according to availability for field trips and other educational activities. Regular meetings are held with the organization’s officials to discuss future plans and activities. Ongoing support is received from student associations in many departmental activities. For associations and chapters that belong to the Civil Engineering program, a new office with permanent archives and office materials has been constructed.
